Game Report – June 2013

Game Report – June 2013
June experienced cool weather with a number of overcast days and a cool breeze, but no rainfall was recorded. Temperatures were as low as 5°C during the night, but the days warmed up with a maximum of 28°C. Lions Lion activity has been great, with lion sightings on 80% of the days in June! The lion pride with the nine cubs is regularly seen – these youngsters are growing fast! On one morning, our guides found the family all split up into three little groups over a wide area with some of the cubs left by themselves and in obvious distress, as they were trying to find their family. Fortunately...

Game Report May 2013

Game Report May 2013
The month of May has experienced cooler weather and, although the grass has dried up in all habitats but that of the riverine areas, the trees and bushes are still looking green. No rainfall was recorded during this month and temperatures ranged between 8 and 31°C as we move into the cool dry season. Lions Recent lion activity on Mashatu has allowed for some very interesting sightings. The old male lion, Matswane, has been in and out of the property and very much within the territory of the two Juma males. Fortunately the two lionesses and their nine cubs have managed to keep out of his reach. The...

Game Report March 2013

Game Report March 2013
Weather and vegetation March had a few days of cool weather with temperatures below 20C, but most of the month was warm. On the first day of the month we received 17mm of rain, which brought down the Majali River, bursting it’s banks in some places. The Jwala River was also in flood. It is always spectacular to see the first flood of a river; we were waiting for the rain to subside while having our tea on the terrace when the small stream in front of the camp started to flow, within minutes the little stream turned into a powerful river, rising steadily as we looked on. The Limpopo River has...

December Game Report

December Game Report
A season in review The month of December started with a nice quantity of rain following a nearly totally dry November.  The single event brought measures of 12 – 55 mm of rain throughout the Northern Tuli Game Reserve. Heavy erosive action was experienced north of the airport where the greatest amount of rainfall was measured.  Now with road passage regained the land as well has shown the clear signs of recovery we have been waiting for.  Although grass cover has not been regained throughout the greater reserve, a vast expanse of greenery can now be seen near the marsh and surrounding low lying...

November Game Report

November Game Report
The landscape of Mashatu is in full transition from being a dry and dusty place to a luscious green bushveld. Rainfall has been very patchily distributed with Main Camp and Tent Camp getting 21.8mm and 15.5mm respectively. This is, however, not anywhere near the true indication of rainfall in the area. Some places got in excess of 70mm (from one downpour)! While some areas are still dry and dusty, other places you have to drive through deep water pockets. This month we also saw the Majale River coming down in a flash flood, and the Limpopo River is also flowing, although at a very low mark so 2×4...
